EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exquisite effigy of Sir John Stanley, located in St. Peters Church, Elford, Staffordshire, England. Created between 1848-9 by Edward M. Richardson, this hand-coloured engraving showcases the remarkable 15th-century alabaster tomb of Sir John Stanley (1423-74). The attention to detail is evident in the coats of arms adorning the shields; they depict the iconic Stanley emblems of three stags heads. Additionally, beside Sir John's head lies a beautifully carved representation of the Stanley family crest—an eagle and baby—commemorating the legendary tale of an ancestor discovering a child within an eagle's nest. This enchanting story has been immortalized in various pub signs across England, with The Eagle and Child in St Giles, Oxford being one of its most renowned depictions. Richardson meticulously captured these Elford monuments for his publication "Monumental Effigies and Tombs in Elford Church" released in 1852. Through this image, we are transported back to medieval times as we admire the intricate armor worn by Sir John and marvel at his knightly presence. The use of alabaster adds a touch of elegance to this monumental sculpture while preserving its historical significance. This print serves as a testament to both Richardson's artistic skill and our enduring fascination with medieval artistry and heritage.
