8666249 Guckkastenmann / Peep Box Man (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Guckkastenmann. Translation: Peep Box Man. The viewing box can be described as the primitive forerunner of our cinema. Through a round enlarging pane of glass one could look at the pictures on the back wall of the box, which could be moved with the help of a crank and represented the rolling film of our ancestors. The peep box was always welcome, especially at fairs. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).); © Look and Learn
