Popular Superstitions: The breaking of a mirror (colour litho)

8668707 Popular Superstitions: The breaking of a mirror (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The breaking of a mirror. Many people still regard the breaking of a mirror with dread, and as a sure sign of ill-luck to come. The origin of the belief probably goes back to a period ages before looking-glasses were thought of. The mirror of primitive woman was the nearest stream in which she could behold her reflection, and in those days such a reflection could only be explained by assuming that the soul or spirit was transferred to the water. Hence, a jealous rival, by throwing a stone and disturbing the image, believed she would cause harm to the original of the reflection. EDITORS COMMENTS
Popular Superstitions: The breaking of a mirror has long been regarded with dread, believed to bring about ill-luck and misfortune. This fear dates back to ancient times when mirrors did not exist, and primitive women would use streams as their reflection. It was thought that the soul or spirit could be transferred to the water, making it vulnerable to harm by jealous rivals who disturbed the image with a stone. This superstition is depicted in a colour lithograph from the 20th century, part of a set of cigarette cards on Popular Superstitions issued by Godfrey Phillips in 1930. The image captures the essence of this age-old belief, showcasing how deeply ingrained superstitions can be in human culture. The fear associated with breaking a mirror reflects our innate desire for protection against unseen forces and unknown dangers. Despite advancements in technology and science, superstitions continue to hold power over our minds and actions. This print serves as a reminder of the mysterious ways in which beliefs are formed and passed down through generations. It invites us to explore the origins of superstitions and contemplate their significance in shaping our perceptions of luck, fate, and destiny.
