Popular Superstitions: The breaking of a mirror (colour litho)

8668707 Popular Superstitions: The breaking of a mirror (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The breaking of a mirror. Many people still regard the breaking of a mirror with dread, and as a sure sign of ill-luck to come. The origin of the belief probably goes back to a period ages before looking-glasses were thought of. The mirror of primitive woman was the nearest stream in which she could behold her reflection, and in those days such a reflection could only be explained by assuming that the soul or spirit was transferred to the water. Hence, a jealous rival, by throwing a stone and disturbing the image, believed she would cause harm to the original of the reflection.
