EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of Tara Kothi Observatory, a historical landmark in Lucknow, India. Taken by Felice Beato (also known as Felix) in the 19th century, this image is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The Tara Kothi Observatory, also known as Tarawali Kothi or House of Star, was established by King Nasiruddin Haydar in 1832. This architectural gem showcases Palladian style with its arched portico and grand facade. However, time has taken its toll on this once majestic structure - the domed roof shows signs of damage and neglect. Associated with the Indian Mutiny that took place between 1857-59, this observatory witnessed significant events during that tumultuous period. In front of the building can be seen gun carriages - remnants of a troubled past. The photograph beautifully captures both the colonial architecture and Indian landscape surrounding Tara Kothi Observatory. The derelict state adds an air of mystery to this scene - unkempt yet still captivating. Bridgeman Images presents this stunning piece from their collection without any commercial use intended. It serves as a reminder of India's rich history and cultural heritage preserved through photography for generations to come.
