JEB4853857 Symbolic representation of the Universe. Detail of a dog and a stork. Romanesque mosaic of the four rivers, 12th century, pavement of the altar of the chapel of Saint Nicholas, inside the Old Episcopal Palace. Around the polar star, the four rivers of Earth Paradise (Tiger, Euphrates, Gehon and Phison) are figures in the form of heads of human bulls spitting nets of water. Each river is associated with a symbol probably alluding to the different periods of Holy History. The West-East part dedicated to the land and freshwater animals, fish, crayfish, pelican, dog and stork. The marine world occupies the northeast corner with red waves, black algae and fish. The four cardinal points are symbolized by wind heads and rosettes. A red stream represents the Ocean River that surrounds the Earth. The southeast part evokes the vegetation fecondee by water and that pecked birds. Dim. 3, 60x4, 40 m Die (Drome); (add.info.: Symbolic representation of the Universe. Detail of a dog and a stork. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Romanesque mosaic, dating back to the 12th century, is a symbolic representation of the Universe. The intricate details of a dog and a stork are just a small part of the larger masterpiece found on the pavement of the altar in the chapel of Saint Nicholas inside the Old Episcopal Palace. The focal point of this artwork is around the polar star, where four rivers representing Earth Paradise - Tiger, Euphrates, Gehon and Phison - flow as figures in the form of human bull heads spitting nets of water. Each river is thought to symbolize different periods in Holy History. The mosaic also includes representations of land and freshwater animals like fish, crayfish, pelicans, dogs and storks. The marine world is depicted with red waves, black algae and fish in one corner while wind heads and rosettes symbolize the cardinal points. A red stream represents Ocean River surrounding Earth while vegetation fertilized by water attracts pecking birds in another section. This piece measures 3.60x4.40 meters and can be found in Die (Drome). It's truly a mesmerizing work that captures both natural elements and spiritual symbolism from centuries ago.
