Restoration of the Human Race or Riproduzione del Genere Umano, Book I - A Mythological Journey
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a hand-coloured engraving from Luigi Ademollo's book "Restoration of the Human Race or Riproduzione del Genere Umano, Book I" based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. Created in Florence in 1832, this illustration takes us back to ancient Greek mythology. In this scene, we witness Deucalion and Pyrrha, husband and wife, as they embark on a monumental task - repopulating the human race. The couple stands amidst a desolate landscape strewn with rocks and stones. With determination etched on their faces, they each hold handfuls of these lifeless objects. As the story goes, Deucalion and Pyrrha were instructed by an oracle to throw behind them "the bones of their mother". In their interpretation of this cryptic message lies the key to restoring humanity. And so it begins - male and female united in purposeful action. The engraving beautifully portrays the metamorphosis taking place before our eyes. As Deucalion throws his stones onto barren ground, they transform into men; while Pyrrha's stones become women. This miraculous event symbolizes not only physical rebirth but also spiritual renewal. Ademollo's attention to detail is evident in every stroke of his hand-colouring technique. The vibrant hues bring life to this mythological tale that
