Silver Regimental Medal, Private John Connors, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), 1855 (metal)

5925149 Silver Regimental Medal, Private John Connors, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), 1855
(metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Silver Regimental Medal awarded to Private John Connors, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), for his gallantry during the assault on the Redan, 8 September 1855.
John Connors, who is erroneously referred to as Joseph Connors in some sources, was born in County Kerry, Ireland and enlisted on 8 January 1849, when he was described as a labourer. He earned the Victoria Cross for conspicuous courage and devotion during the assault on the Redan on 8 September 1855. According to the citation, published in The London Gazette of 24 February 1857, Private Connors got inside the Redan at great personal risk, and seeing an officer of the 30th Regiment surrounded by the enemy, he rushed to his assistance. He immediately shot one of the Russians, ran his bayonet through another, and then for some time carried on a hand-to-hand encounter against great odds until support came.
Before he could receive his Victoria Cross, Connors tragically died. It is believed he fell to his death from the battlements of Port Neuf, on the island of Corfu, where the Buffs were then garrisoned, on 29 January 1857. Connors is buried on the island. The whereabouts of his VC is not known and it is possible that his widow, then living in County Galway, never received it.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Silver Regimental Medal awarded to Private John Connors of the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) in 1855. The medal, crafted from silver, is a testament to his exceptional bravery during the assault on the Redan on September 8th, 1855. Born in County Kerry, Ireland, Connors enlisted as a labourer on January 8th, 1849. His remarkable actions during the assault earned him not only this prestigious regimental medal but also the Victoria Cross for his conspicuous courage and devotion. According to an official citation published in The London Gazette on February 24th, 1857, Private Connors fearlessly entered the Redan at great personal risk. Witnessing an officer of another regiment surrounded by enemy forces, he rushed to his aid without hesitation. Displaying incredible skill and determination, Connors shot one Russian soldier and bayoneted another before engaging in a fierce hand-to-hand combat against overwhelming odds until reinforcements arrived. Tragically, before receiving his well-deserved Victoria Cross for these heroic acts, Connors met an untimely demise. It is believed that he fell from Port Neuf's battlements on Corfu Island where The Buffs were stationed on January 29th, 1857. He was laid to rest there while his widow back in County Galway may never have received her late husband's distinguished award. Though it remains unknown where his Victoria Cross currently resides today or if it ever reached its intended recipient after all these years since its creation; this photograph immortalizes Private John Connors' extraordinary valor and sacrifice within history's annals.
