EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a heavy gun in Fort Woodbury, Virginia, in 1861. The image showcases Union artillerymen from the 4th Michigan Volunteers proudly posing with a formidable 24-pounder gun. This particular fort was constructed on Arlington Heights to bolster the defense of Washington, D. C. , during the Civil War. The gun itself is an older M. 1829 model mounted atop a front-pintle barbette-carriage, demonstrating the advancements in weaponry during this era. Interestingly, three members of the crew are still wearing their infantry gaiters while two sport tasseled Canada hats or caps, unique headgear originating from French influence that was exclusive to Michigan soldiers. Through modern photographic restoration techniques, this image has been enhanced by combining its original stereographic pair of wet-collodion glass negatives into one extra-wide photograph. It has also undergone cleaning and repairs to bring out its true essence. The photo offers a glimpse into the lives of these brave men who served as cannoneers during one of America's most tumultuous periods. Their dedication and commitment to defending their nation is evident as they stand confidently alongside their powerful weapon. This print serves as both a historical artifact and a testament to the strength and resilience displayed by those who fought for what they believed in during this pivotal time in American history.
