"Heavy Artillery: Unleashing Destruction and Determination Throughout History" From the blood-soaked fields of the Battle of the Somme to the heroic deeds near Compiegne, it has left an indelible mark on history. On that fateful day, 1 July 1916, First World War soldiers witnessed its devastating power for the first time. The deafening roar and earth-shattering explosions echoed through time. In a haunting black and white photograph from Charleston Harbor in 1865, we see a discarded Confederate mortar at abandoned Fort Johnson. A relic of a bygone era when brother fought against brother in a struggle for freedom or oppression. The Armistice Night of 1918 brought relief but also reflection as artists captured this momentous occasion on canvas. Their strokes immortalized the end of one chapter while reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who served. Among these powerful weapons was Krupp's 1000-Pounder Gun, an engineering marvel from c1872 whose sheer size struck fear into hearts across battlefields. Its presence alone could turn tides and change destinies. David Knox's depiction of Mortar Dictator standing proudly before Petersburg in October 1864 showcases not only its destructive capabilities but also pays homage to those who operated it with unwavering determination. Wood & Gibson's photographs transport us back to May 1862 near Yorktown, Virginia where Battery No. 1 and Battery No. 4 stood tall amidst smoke-filled skies. These images capture both the awe-inspiring might and strategic importance these fortifications held during times of war. Mons Meg at Edinburgh Castle stands as a testament to Scotland's military prowess while beside her is a private from Royal battalion - two symbols representing centuries-old traditions intertwined with modern warfare technology. George N. Barnard's lens reveals Rebel Works in Front of Atlanta, GA - remnants of Confederate defenses that once guarded against Union advances during the tumultuous year of 1864.
