EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a map of a part of Yucatan and the eastern shore within the Bay of Honduras, specifically allotted to Great Britain for the cutting of logwood as per the convention signed with Spain on July 14th, 1786. Created by William Faden in 1787, this hand-colored engraving provides a detailed look at the region, complete with scales in geographical and nautical miles as well as Spanish leagues. The historical significance of this map is evident through extracts from treaties between Britain and Spain printed in the left margin. Despite Spain's claim to sovereignty over the area, poor Britons settled in Yucatan from the mid-seventeenth century onwards to extract dye from logwood. Even renowned figures like buccaneer William Dampier were involved in this trade. Through this print, we are transported back in time to an era where international agreements dictated territorial boundaries and economic activities. The intricate details on display serve as a reminder of the complex relationships between nations during that period. This piece not only serves as a valuable historical document but also highlights the importance of understanding past conventions and their impact on present-day geopolitics.
