EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Louis XV commode, crafted around 1740 by the talented Bernard van Risamburgh. Measuring an impressive 84x178x69 cm, this exquisite piece is part of a private collection and boasts an array of intricate details. The commode features a serpentine-fronted moulded Portor marble top, which adds elegance to its overall design. The doors are adorned with Chinese lacquer panels that have been embellished with European motifs depicting figures within picturesque landscapes. A central cartouche framed by C-scrolls, rocaille, and trailing flowers further enhances the visual appeal. Noteworthy elements include ruffled shell and foliate angles at the corners, splayed legs terminating in floral scroll-cast sabots, and waved doors on the sides enclosing compartments with shelves. The craftsmanship is truly remarkable. Although there have been some minor restorations to the lacquer over time and old repairs to the marble top can be observed, these imperfections only add character to this exceptional piece of furniture. With its timeless beauty and historical significance, this Louis XV commode represents both artistic mastery and cultural fusion between Chinese lacquerwork and European aesthetics. It serves as a testament to the skillful craftsmanship of its creator while also offering us a glimpse into the opulence of 18th-century interior design.
