French prestigious Ocean Liner Normandie

Undated picture of the French prestigious Ocean Liner Normandie. The Normandie was built in Saint-Nazaire for Compagnie Gnrale Transatlantique and launched 29 October 1932. It was the largest and fastest ship in the world and many considered it the greatest of all ocean liners. In 1942, while being converted to a troopship during World War II, Normandie caught fire, capsized, and sank in New-York harbour. Although she was salvaged at great expense, restoration was deemed too costly, and she was scrapped in October 1946. (Photo by - / AFP)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This undated print captures the grandeur and elegance of the French prestigious Ocean Liner Normandie. Built in Saint-Nazaire for Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, this magnificent vessel was launched on 29 October 1932. With its impressive size and remarkable speed, it held the title of the largest and fastest ship in the world, earning a reputation as one of the greatest ocean liners ever created. Tragically, during World War II in 1942, while undergoing conversion into a troopship, disaster struck. The Normandie caught fire and eventually capsized before sinking in New York Harbor. Despite being salvaged at great expense, restoration efforts were deemed too costly to undertake. As a result, this once-majestic liner met its ultimate fate when it was scrapped in October 1946. In this black-and-white photograph from Agence France-Presse (AFP), we are reminded of both the splendor and sorrow associated with this iconic vessel. Its sleek silhouette stands tall against a backdrop that showcases both river and sea transport. This image serves as a poignant reminder of an era when ocean liners represented not only luxurious travel but also symbols of human ingenuity
