South American Sealion - Group of adult female sealions walking on the beach rather than swimming along the shore to cross an area where killer whales wait to capture sealion pups

South American Sealion - Group of adult female sealions walking on the beach rather than swimming along the shore to cross an area where killer whales / Orcas wait to capture sealion pups.
Punta Norte, Valdes Peninsula, Patagonia, Argentina
Otaria flavescens
Killer whales do not capture the adults but sometimes chase them, perhaps practicing their hunting skills, perhaps as pure harassment. The sea lions seem never to forget that when they were little they had been hunted by the orcas. Although they travel more slowly on land than in water, and have to make frequent stops to rest, they avoid swimming in areas where they know killer whales are present

Sealion Squad - Walking the Beach, Outsmarting Orcas!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by Francois Gohier, a group of adult female sealions showcase their clever strategy to outwit killer whales along the shores of Patagonia. These intelligent marine mammals have learned from past experiences and refuse to swim in areas where orcas lurk, even though they are not direct targets. With their flippers gracefully gliding across the sandy beach, these sea lion ladies prove that walking can be just as stylish as swimming! Though slower on land and needing frequent rest stops, they navigate Punta Norte's coastal terrain with finesse. Their determination to avoid danger is awe-inspiring; it seems they never forget the days when they were vulnerable pups hunted by these cunning orcas. While some may argue that the orcas chase them for practice or simply pure harassment, our fearless sealion squad remains undeterred. They know better than anyone that safety comes first! So join us in celebrating these South American superstars who have mastered both land and sea survival skills. From Argentina's picturesque Valdes Peninsula emerges a tale of resilience and wit – proof that sometimes taking a leisurely stroll can be an ingenious solution to life's challenges. Bravo, sealion sisters!
