People who visited the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon Lookout during the 1950s and 1960s would remember, with affection, the world famous White Cats. This family of friendly felines lived in a cattage on the roof of the Pylon Lookout, (14 steps up a ladder from the Parapet Level). Here they had their own merry-go-round, roamed the roof garden and guarded a Wishing Well.
The cats belonged to Mrs Rentoul, who operated the Lookout at the time, and they soon became a popular attraction

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from January 1957, we are introduced to George the cat, a resident of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Perched high atop one of the pylon supports, George keeps a watchful eye on the bustling city below through a pair of binoculars. The image captures his curiosity and alertness as he surveys his surroundings with great interest. During the 1950s and 1960s, visitors to the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon Lookout would fondly remember encounters with these famous White Cats. This particular family of friendly felines resided in their own cattage on the roof of the lookout, just 14 steps up a ladder from ground level. They had their own little paradise complete with a merry-go-round and an enchanting roof garden where they roamed freely. The cats were owned by Mrs Rentoul, who operated the lookout at that time. As word spread about these unique residents, they quickly became beloved attractions for tourists and locals alike. Their presence added an element of whimsy to an already iconic landmark. This photograph not only showcases George's distinctive personality but also provides us with a glimpse into a bygone era when animals played unexpected roles in our urban landscapes. It serves as a reminder that even amidst towering structures like bridges and skyscrapers, there is always room for moments of connection between humans and animals that bring joy to our lives.
