EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense atmosphere of the 1972 Munich Olympics Men's 200m final. As the runners approach the bend in the iconic Olympiastadion, their determination and focus are palpable. From left to right, we see a lineup of exceptional athletes representing different nations. East Germany's Siegfried Schenke (#344), USA's Larry Burton (#976), USSR's Valeriy Borzov (#932), West Germany's Martin Jellinghaus (#371), USA's Chuck Smith (#1016), Italy's Pietro Mennea (#528), and USA's Larry Black (#973) showcase their remarkable speed and agility on this historic track. Valeriy Borzov emerges as an undisputed champion in this race, dominating his opponents by a staggering two-meter lead. His victory not only secured him the gold medal but also marked an extraordinary achievement as he became the first sprinter from outside North America to complete a 100m/200m double at an Olympic Games. Larry Black secures second place, earning himself a well-deserved silver medal for his outstanding performance. Meanwhile, Pietro Mennea claims third place with his impressive display of skill and determination. It is worth noting that fourth-place finisher Larry Burton went on to make waves in another sport entirely. He transitioned into professional American football after these Olympics and enjoyed a successful career as a wide receiver for both the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers over five years.
