EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Bombardment and Capture of Fort Henry, Tenn, c. 1862" takes us back to a significant moment in American history during the Civil War. The artwork, a colour lithograph by Currier and Ives, vividly depicts the intense battle that unfolded on February 6th, 1862. The scene showcases Commodore Andrew H. Foote's Federal Gunboats as they relentlessly bombard Fort Henry in Tennessee. Seven ironclad gunboats named Cincinnati, St. Louis, Carondelet, Essex, Lexington, Conestoga, and Tyler dominate the composition with their billowing black smokestacks emitting thick clouds of smoke into the air. As cannons from both sides exchange fire with thunderous booms and orange blasts of light illuminating the sky above them; it becomes evident that this was not an ordinary confrontation. The earthen fort is under attack while its cannon shots hit the water in front of the Union fleet. This image captures not only the dramatic intensity but also highlights key elements such as historical context and strategic significance. It serves as a visual testament to one chapter within America's complex past - showcasing bravery from both Confederate secessionists defending their fortress and Union forces determined to capture it. Preserved within the Gilder Lehrman Collection in New York City today; this artwork stands as a powerful reminder of our nation's tumultuous history during times of war - where battles were fought at sea between mighty warships seeking victory for their respective causes.
