Liberty Triumphant, or the Downfall of Oppression, 1773 - A Powerful Depiction of American Resistance

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This engraving from 1773, titled "Liberty Triumphant, or the Downfall of Oppression" offers a visual narrative of New Englanders' response to the British Tea Tax. Measuring 23.2x33.7 cm and housed at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts, this artwork holds historical significance. The illustration portrays two contrasting sides on a map of the northern and middle colonies. On the left-hand side stand British politicians and merchants alongside a devilish figure symbolizing oppression. In stark contrast on the right are American colonists dressed as Native Americans - representing those who participated in the iconic Boston Tea Party. Attributed to Henry Dawkins, an engraver known for his involvement in counterfeiting continental and provincial currency during that time period, this cartoon carries additional weight due to its creator's controversial background. Through satire and caricature, this political cartoon captures both colonial unrest and aspirations for independence. It serves as a reminder of civil disobedience by depicting acts such as dressing up as Native Americans during protests against unjust taxation. As we gaze upon this print today, it stands not only as a testament to America's fight for freedom but also as an artistic representation of defiance against tyranny. The image resonates with viewers worldwide who appreciate history's pivotal moments captured through artistry and symbolism.
