In 1081 William the Conqueror determined to undertake an expedition to Wales. Marching in force, he gained submission from the chiefs, and conciliated the heads of the Welsh Church by a visit to the Cathedral of St David. But following this his knights under the lead of Robert FitzHamon, Earl of Gloucester, overran South Wales and occupied the country from the Wye to Milford Heaven. By erecting massive strongholds they kept in subjection the native princes, who were never able to recover permanent possession of their territories.
