Campaign medal awarded to Captain (later General) John Briggs, political assistant.
The Army of India Medal was approved in 1851 for issue to officers and men of the British Army and Honourable East India Companys forces. The award was given retrospectively to survivors of various actions during the period 1799 to 1826. This included the 2nd Maratha War (1803-1805), the Gurkha War (1814-1816), the Pindaree or 3rd Maratha War (1817-1818) and the 1st Burma War (1824-1826).
Briggs received his medal for services during the 3rd Maratha War. Maheidpoor (or Mahidpore) was one of the last battles of that conflict and saw General Sir Thomas Hislop defeat the army of Indore on 23 December 1817.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a remarkable piece of history, the Army of India Medal 1799-1826, with its clasp proudly displaying "Maheidpoor". This prestigious medal belonged to Captain (later General) John Briggs, a political assistant during that era. Created by the British School in the 19th century and now housed at the National Army Museum in London, this artifact represents bravery and dedication. The Army of India Medal was authorized in 1851 to honor officers and soldiers from both the British Army and the Honourable East India Company's forces. It recognized their valorous actions between 1799 and 1826 across various conflicts such as the Maratha Wars, Gurkha War, Pindaree War, and Burma War. Captain Briggs received his well-deserved medal for his outstanding service during the intense battles of the 3rd Maratha War. The clasp specifically commemorates Maheidpoor (also known as Mahidpore), one of the final engagements of that conflict. On December 23rd, 1817, General Sir Thomas Hislop led a triumphant charge against Indore's army. This image not only showcases an exquisite military decoration but also encapsulates a significant period in Indian history. It serves as a testament to Captain Briggs' courage and commitment as he played an instrumental role during these tumultuous times. Preserved through time by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Fine Art Finder, this photograph allows us to appreciate both artistry and historical significance simultaneously.
