EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a piece of scientific history - a lacquered brass microscope that once belonged to the Darwin family, dating back to the early 19th century. The microscope, measuring 13.7x10.7x3.7 cm, is a Gould-type monocular model signed 'Cary, London' on the arm and comes in its original mahogany box complete with various accessories. The intricate details of this antique microscope are truly fascinating - from the three lenses and convex mirror to the stage with an ivory disc painted black on one side. The set also includes a condenser lens, Lieberkuhn reflector, light/dark-ground discs, live box, forceps, tweezers, and an ivory-handled dissecting pin. A special touch lies beneath the tray where a manuscript list of objects on three slides can be found along with a handwritten monogram for Leonard Darwin dated June 14th, 1864. This personal connection adds depth and character to this already remarkable piece. As we gaze upon this beautifully preserved artifact from centuries past, we are reminded of the pioneering work of Charles Darwin and his contributions to biology. This exquisite microscope is not just a tool for scientific exploration but also a symbol of innovation and discovery that continues to inspire awe today.
