EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a remarkable piece of craftsmanship from the late 18th century - a musical organ clock. Created by the German School, this exquisite timepiece stands at an impressive size of 234x87x62 cm and is made of ormolu and brass-mounted mahogany. The clock's rectangular stepped breakfront case is adorned with intricate details, including a pierced gallery with flaming urn finials and a central garlanded urn. Above it, a moulded architectural cornice features a mask of Apollo within a triangular pediment. The white enamel Roman and Arabic dial bears the signature of P. Bofenschen Hannover, indicating that Peter Bofenschen was responsible for its movement. The clock's movement is truly extraordinary; it consists of twin-going barrel mechanisms that strike on bell and play music through one of nine large cylindrical pin barrels. These barrels are secured to the massive brass frame using latches, while transverse-mounted leather bellows generate air to blow through sixty wooden pipes. Additionally, the clock can produce beautiful melodies on a dulcimer with seventy individual strings. Every inch of this musical organ clock exudes elegance and sophistication. From ribbon-tied floral garlands to fluted columns and pilasters topped with ionic capitals, every detail has been meticulously crafted to create an awe-inspiring work of art. This print captures not only the beauty but also the historical significance of this magnificent timepiece held in private collection today.
