All the Highland Regiments wear a white hackle, or plume, in their bonnets with the exception of the Black Watch, who display a distinctive red feather in their head-dress. The origin of this interesting distinction has, unfortunately, never been definitely established. It is known, however, that on the birthday of King George III in 1795 the regiment received a box of red vulture feathers in recognition of its bravery on the Continent, and ever since the emblem has been a treasured prerogative of the Black Watch.
