Do You Know: Who decreed the of a yard? (colour litho)

8668104 Do You Know: Who decreed the of a yard? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Who decreed the of a yard? Henry I, in the 12th century, decreed the distance from the point of his nose to the end of his thumb as the lawful yard. Under the Norman Kings measurements were of considerable importance, particularly for cloth, in which there was a large trade. Edward II decreed that three barley corns taken from the centre of the ear and placed end on end, equalled an inch. In the 16th century the lawful Rod was "the length of the left feet of sixteen men lined up as they left Church on Sunday morning". The first known measurement was a cubit - the length of a forearm from the point of the elbow to end of middle finger, about 20 in. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph print titled "Do You Know: Who decreed the of a yard?" by the English School from the 20th century offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of measurement standards. In the 12th century, King Henry I declared that the distance from his nose to his thumb was to be considered as one yard, highlighting the importance of accurate measurements during that time. The illustration also delves into other intriguing historical measurement facts, such as Edward II's decree about barley corns equaling an inch and how in the 16th century, a rod was defined as "the length of sixteen men's left feet lined up after leaving church on Sunday morning." These details shed light on how various units of measurement were established and evolved over centuries. Issued as part of a set of educational cigarette cards by Carreras in 1939, this print serves as both an artistic piece and a valuable source of knowledge about past practices. The vibrant colours and intricate details make it visually appealing while also sparking curiosity about historical methods of measuring. It is truly a unique blend of artistry and education captured in one striking image.
