Sea Adventure: Kempthorne and the Algerines (colour litho)

8668731 Sea Adventure: Kempthorne and the Algerines (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Kempthorne and the Algerines. In 1669 Captain John Kempthorne, in HM fourth-rate Mary Rose, was escorting a convoy through the pirate-infested waters near Trafalgar, when he encountered the main Algerine squadron of seven corsair ships, each more powerful than his. He fought them for hours, repaired his battered ship through the night, and in the morning resumed the fight until they were glad enough to run. Kempthorne was knighted by Charles II for this gallant action. A picture of the fight in Greenwich Hospital bears the inscription: Two we burnt, and two we sank, and two did run away, And one we carried to Leghorn Roads to show we'd won the day. EDITORS COMMENTS
Sea Adventure: Kempthorne and the Algerines is a captivating colour lithograph that depicts a thrilling historical moment from the 17th century. In 1669, Captain John Kempthorne bravely faced off against seven powerful Algerine corsair ships while escorting a convoy through dangerous waters near Trafalgar. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Kempthorne fought valiantly for hours, eventually forcing the enemy to retreat. The image captures the intense clash between Kempthorne's ship, HM fourth-rate Mary Rose, and the menacing Algerine squadron. The scene is filled with action as cannons fire and ships maneuver in a desperate battle for survival. The courage and determination of Kempthorne are evident as he repairs his battered vessel through the night and continues to fight until victory is achieved. This print not only showcases a dramatic naval engagement but also commemorates an act of heroism that earned Kempthorne knighthood from King Charles II. The inscription on a picture at Greenwich Hospital proudly proclaims their triumph: "Two we burnt, two we sank, two did run away, And one we carried to Leghorn Roads to show we'd won the day." This historic event serves as a reminder of bravery in the face of adversity and stands as a testament to human resilience in times of conflict.
