The capture of the Fort of Villegagnon from La Cosmographie universelle

CHT157467 The capture of the Fort of Villegagnon from La Cosmographie universelle by Andre Thevet, c.1560 (engraving) by Thevet, Andre (1504-92); Private Collection; (add.info.: Prise du Fort de Villegagnon; Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon (c.1510-1571), French sailor, founded a protestant colony in Rio Bay; Villegagnon Island is located near the mouth of the large Guanabara Bay, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Named for the French admiral Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon, whose troops occupied the Island in 1555, consequently building Fort Coligny on the island when attempting to establish the France Antarctique colony. With the arrival of more Portuguese troops from the So Vicente Capitania on March 15, 1560, Villegagnon Island became the stage for the attack from the Portuguese army commanded by Mem de SAa, who deployed his troops on the island. Two days later the French abandoned the fort looking for refuge with the Tamoios, a native tribe from Brazil. The fort was destroyed and on March 17, 1560 the first Portuguese mass was celebrated on the island

The Capture of the Fort of Villegagnon - A Historic Moment in Rio de Janeiro's Past

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant event in the history of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The engraving depicts the dramatic capture of the Fort of Villegagnon, which took place in 1560. The fort was originally built by French sailor Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon, who established a Protestant colony on Villegagnon Island. However, with the arrival of Portuguese troops led by Mem de Sá, tensions escalated and conflict ensued. In this scene, we witness the Portuguese army deploying their forces on the island to reclaim it from French control. Two days later, realizing defeat was imminent, the French abandoned their fort and sought refuge with a native tribe called Tamoios. The destruction of Fort Coligny marked an important turning point for Rio de Janeiro as it symbolized Portugal's successful defense against foreign colonization attempts. On March 17th that same year, a historic moment occurred when the first Portuguese mass was celebrated on this very island. Through this remarkable engraving from Andre Thevet's La Cosmographie universelle collection, we are transported back in time to witness this pivotal event firsthand. It serves as a reminder of Rio de Janeiro's rich historical tapestry and its enduring resilience against outside influences. This print is not just an artwork but also a window into Brazil's past—a testament to its complex colonial history and cultural heritage that continues to shape its present-day identity.
