EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases Sir John Dodderidge, a prominent figure in the 17th century. Painted by an unknown artist, this oil on panel artwork measures 69x59 cm and is currently held at the Society of Antiquaries of London, UK. Sir John Dodderidge is depicted wearing his judge's robes for the Kings Bench, exuding an air of authority and seriousness. Despite his stern expression, there is a subtle hint of humor captured in his portrayal. His portly figure adds to the charm and character of this painting. Dodderidge was not only a respected judge but also a member of the Elizabethan Society of Antiquaries. He played a role in advocating for the establishment of an academy dedicated to studying antiquity and history alongside notable figures such as Sir Robert Cotton and James Lee. Unfortunately, their petition did not succeed. Hailing from Devon, Dodderidge has left behind a lasting legacy with a monument dedicated to him and his wife in Exeter Cathedral's Lady Chapel. This portrait serves as a testament to his contributions as both an esteemed judge and devoted antiquarian. The artist skillfully captures Dodderidge's essence through intricate details such as his ruff collar that was fashionable during Queen Elizabeth I's reign. This print offers viewers insight into the life and personality of this influential historical figure while showcasing exceptional artistry from Bridgeman Images' collection on Fine Art Finder.
