EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Colossus of Abu Simbel in Egypt. The colossal monuments built by the ancient Egyptian civilization have been a popular destination for tourists since the late 19th century, when the allure of archaeological discoveries extended beyond just experts and reached common people as well. French journalist, writer, academic, and photographer Maxime Du Camp was enthralled by this charm and embarked on a trip to Egypt with his friend Gustave Flaubert to visit and photograph renowned archaeological sites. In this particular image, we see a man sitting atop the crown of the colossus, which stands as high as Pharaoh's nose. He perfectly captures its grandiose proportions through his lens. Taken by Maxime Du Camp at Abu Simbel in 1851, this photograph beautifully portrays the intricate details of this giant sculpture in high relief. The Colossus of Abu Simbel is part of Ramses II's legacy from the 19th Dynasty of ancient Egypt. It represents not only an extraordinary feat of engineering but also serves as a testament to Ramses II's power and influence during his reign. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Abu Simbel continues to captivate visitors with its awe-inspiring rock temples and remarkable sculptures like this one captured by Maxime Du Camp. This print from Bridgeman Images allows us to appreciate both the artistry and historical significance embodied within these ancient wonders.
