Monstrance with a Relic of Saint Sebastian, 1484 (gilded silver, rock crystal)

491169 Monstrance with a Relic of Saint Sebastian, 1484 (gilded silver, rock crystal) by German School, (15th century); h:47.00 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: This Late Gothic monstrance (from the Latin monstrare, " to show" ) is mentioned in the earliest inventory of Saint Blaise as " a large new monstrance containing relics of Saint Sebastian the martyr." Judging from surviving receipts, the reliquary was made by Werner Korff, a local goldsmith, who received payments for silver and gilding at the end of 1484. The reliquary was first displayed on the altar of the church of Saint Blaise in a solemn penitential mass on June 4, 1484, in an effort to ward off the plague. A recent examination revealed that the relic is a human metatarsal bone (one of five long bones of the human foot) and that its owner seemed to have suffered from periostitis, a medical condition that affects the connective tissue surrounding the bone.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Monstrance with a Relic of Saint Sebastian" from 1484. Crafted by the skilled hands of German goldsmith Werner Korff, this Late Gothic monstrance is an awe-inspiring piece of artistry. Made from gilded silver and rock crystal, it stands at an impressive height of 47 centimeters. The reliquary holds a significant relic - a human metatarsal bone belonging to Saint Sebastian, the martyr. A recent examination revealed that the bone's owner suffered from periostitis, adding another layer of historical intrigue to this already remarkable artifact. Originally created as a means to ward off the plague, this monstrance was first displayed on June 4th, 1484 during a solemn penitential mass at the church of Saint Blaise. Its purpose was not only religious but also practical in nature - seeking protection against a devastating disease that plagued society during that time. Now housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this precious gift was generously donated by Julius F. Goldschmidt, Z. M. Hackenbroch, and J. Rosenbaum in memory of the Exhibition of the Guelph Treasure held at the museum in 1931. Through its intricate design and historical significance, this photograph invites us to marvel at both artistic craftsmanship and spiritual devotion intertwined within one extraordinary object.
