EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-coloured lithograph captures the beauty and engineering marvel of the Viaduct at Ivy Bridge, Devon in 1846. Designed by the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the South Devon Railway, this viaduct was a crucial part of the Totnes to Laira (Plymouth) line when it opened in 1848. The piers of this viaduct were constructed from local granite with a timber trestle superstructure, showcasing both strength and elegance in its design. Originally built for trains using an atmospheric system, it had to be reinforced to accommodate heavier loads when steam locomotives took over. Published by O. Angel in Exeter and R. Lidstone Bookseller in Plymouth, this print is not just a historical document but also a work of art that highlights the intricate details of railway infrastructure from the 19th century. As you gaze upon this image, you can almost hear the sound of trains passing over this bridge and imagine yourself transported back in time to witness the hustle and bustle of railway traffic. The Viaduct at Ivy Bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in overcoming challenges posed by transportation needs during that era.
