Akalis Tower at Umritzir - from a drawing by W. Carpenter, Jun. 1858. Creator: Unknown

Akalis Tower at Umritzir - from a drawing by W. Carpenter, Jun. 1858. For whatever purpose this elegant and fanciful building was erected, its present name is derived from a circumstance in the war of the Sikhs, when a band of Akalis (those furious fanatics, in their blue dresses and bands and chains of steel, who had constituted themseleves the guardians of the tank and temple) were pursued here after the city was taken, and driven from floor to floor till the remnant finally precipitated themselves from the summit rather than yield and confess themselves vanquished'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photographic print depicts Akalis Tower at Umritzir, a stunning architectural marvel from the 19th century located in Amritsar, India. The image is based on a drawing by W. Carpenter, created in June 1858, and was published in the "Illustrated London News." The tower's intriguing history is intertwined with the Sikh Wars, during which a band of Akalis, devout Sikh warriors, defended the tank and temple in the city. The Akalis, known for their distinctive blue attire and steel chains, were relentlessly pursued by the British forces after the city's capture. They retreated to the tower, floor by floor, until their final stand. Rather than surrendering, the remaining Akalis chose to precipitously leap from the tower's summit, an act of defiance that earned them the name "Akalis Tower." This elegant and domed structure, with its rich history and tragic past, stands as a testament to the Mughal Empire's architectural legacy in India during the British Raj. The print, with its intricate details, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time of imperialism, war, and controversy. The Akalis Tower at Umritzir remains a significant historical landmark, embodying the spirit of resistance and the indomitable will of those who fought for their beliefs.
