EDITORS COMMENTS
Amurat Khan II, also known as Mehmed Murad II, is depicted in this stunning mezzotint print from John Young's "Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey," created in 1815. The Ottoman Sultan, dressed in ornate and intricately designed clothing, wears a circular headdress adorned with precious stones and gold, adding to his regal appearance. His long, flowing beard, which is meticulously groomed and styled, frames his face, which is expressive and animated as he gestures with one hand. The print, hand coloured with brush and watercolour on ivory wove, showcases the intricacies of the Sultan's apparel, from the rich fabrics and vibrant colours to the intricate embroidery and delicate fringes. The background is kept simple, allowing the focus to remain on the subject and his elaborate attire. Amurat Khan II ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1421 to 1451, during a time of significant expansion and conflict. He is best known for his military victories against the Byzantines and the Hungarians, as well as his patronage of the arts and architecture. This print, which is part of the Art Institute of Chicago's extensive collection of prints and drawings, offers a glimpse into the rich heritage and history of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire during the fifteenth century. The intricacies of the Sultan's costume, as well as the attention to detail in the print itself, serve as a reminder of the artistic and cultural achievements of this period.
