The Canadian Red River Exploring Expedition - St. Boniface Cathedral, Red River, 1858. Creator: Unknown

The Canadian Red River Exploring Expedition - St. Boniface Cathedral, Red River, 1858. This is the most imposing building in the settlements on the banks on the Red River and the Assinniboine. It possesses no external architectural beauty, but its interior is very prettily decorated. The twin spires of St. Boniface can be seen for a great distance from any part of the boundless level prairies by which it is surrounded. It possesses a very sweet-toned peal of bells; and no sound in Red River is so delightful to the weary voyageur or the stranger on his arrival as the chimes of St. Boniface breaking the stillness of the morning or evening air. Before and after service on Sunday the open space in front of the main entrance is crowded with French half-breeds, dressed in their gayest attire, and wearing all the outward appearances which belong to careless freedom and half-wild rural happiness'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph depicts the St. Boniface Cathedral in Red River, Manitoba, during the Canadian Red River Exploring Expedition of 1858. The image showcases the imposing presence of the cathedral amidst the vast, flat prairies. Although its exterior may not boast architectural grandeur, its interior is beautifully adorned. The cathedral's twin spires can be seen for miles, making it a distinctive landmark for weary travelers and newcomers alike. The sound of its sweet-toned bells ringing through the still morning or evening air was a welcome respite for those arriving in Red River. The open space in front of the cathedral was a bustling hub of activity, with French half-breeds gathered before and after Sunday services, dressed in their finest attire and embodying the carefree, rural happiness of the settlement." This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Red River settlements were still new and the St. Boniface Cathedral stood as a beacon of community and faith. The image captures the unique character of the region and the importance of the cathedral as a gathering place for the settlers. Despite being an unknown creator, the photograph provides a valuable historical record of this significant moment in Canadian history.
