The Cherub!, 1884. Artist: Joseph Swain
The Cherub!, 1884. Joseph Chamberlain is the cherub watching over the British sailor. This relates to Chamberlains Merchant Shipping Bill which aimed to do away with the shipping owners who insured their unseaworthy buckets for vastly inflated sums. Many lives were lost each year through ships putting to sea over-laden or unseaworthy. Not surprisingly, the ship owners were vehemently opposed to the Bill, but Chamberlain was seen to be the good friend and protector of the sailors. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 22, 1884

The Cherub!, 1884
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that depicts the influential British politician Joseph Chamberlain as a cherub, symbolizing his role as the protector and advocate for British sailors. Created by renowned artists John Tenniel and Joseph Swain, this artwork represents Chamberlain's efforts to pass the Merchant Shipping Bill in 1884. The Merchant Shipping Bill aimed to address the alarming number of lives lost at sea due to ships being overloaded or unseaworthy. It targeted shipping owners who insured their unsafe vessels for exorbitant amounts, putting profit above human safety. Unsurprisingly, these ship owners vehemently opposed the bill. Chamberlain emerged as a champion for sailors' rights and safety, earning him the reputation of being their good friend and protector. The cherubic portrayal emphasizes his commitment to safeguarding those who risked their lives on treacherous waters. This thought-provoking cartoon from Punch magazine reflects both satire and caricature through its clever engraving technique. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to its historical context in 19th-century Britain. "The Cherub!, 1884" serves as a powerful reminder of Chamberlain's significant contribution towards maritime legislation and his dedication to protecting sailors from exploitation by unscrupulous ship owners. This heritage image partnership between Tenniel, Swain, and Heritage Images captures an important moment in history when politics intersected with issues of transportation, insurance, and human welfare at sea.
