Colonnade of the Temple of Isis, Philae, Egypt, c1890. Artist: Trade Mark
Colonnade of the Temple of Isis, Philae, Egypt, c1890. The construction of the temple dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis on the island of Philae started during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the 3rd century BC and was completed by his successor Ptolemy III Euergetes. It was the last remaining outpost of the Ancient Egyptian religion when the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian closed it down in c550. After damage caused by flooding after the construction of the Aswan Dam, the temple complex was moved, piece by piece, to another, nearby island in 1977-1980. Lantern slide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Colonnade of the Temple of Isis, located in Philae, Egypt around 1890. The temple's construction began during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the 3rd century BC and was later completed by his successor, Ptolemy III Euergetes. Dedicated to the revered Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis, this sacred site stood as a testament to the ancient religion until it was forcibly closed down by Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian around 550 AD. Over time, natural disasters such as flooding caused damage to the temple complex after the Aswan Dam was built. However, a remarkable feat took place between 1977 and 1980 when every piece of this architectural wonder was carefully relocated to a nearby island for preservation. The black and white lantern slide captures not only intricate stone carvings but also highlights its significance as an archaeological site. This monochrome image transports us back to ancient times while emphasizing its historical importance. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of Egypt's rich cultural heritage and marvel at how this once thriving religious center continues to captivate our imagination even today. It serves as a poignant reminder that despite centuries passing and civilizations changing, remnants like these endure as timeless testaments to human ingenuity and devotion.
