EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in French history - the establishment of the Consulate in 1799. The image depicts General Napoleon Bonaparte, who had just overthrown the government of the Directory, assuming his position as first consul. With this move, he effectively became the dictator of France, a role that would later be solidified when he declared himself Emperor in 1804. The print is taken from "La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles" an esteemed volume edited by F Roy and published between 1882 and 1884. It showcases an engraving that beautifully portrays the atmosphere surrounding this significant political event. Intriguingly, the artist incorporates elements such as deception and persuasion into their work. The crowd depicted seems to be watching intently as Napoleon takes on his new role with confidence and authority. The symbolism of power is evident through imagery like crowns and lettering throughout the scene. This piece serves not only as a historical record but also as a satirical commentary on leadership during turbulent times. It sheds light on how politics played out during this era while offering insight into Napoleon's rise to dominance. As we observe this remarkable print today, it allows us to reflect upon one man's journey from general to emperor and invites us to ponder the complex nature of leadership and revolution in nineteenth-century France.
