"Cupid", by Michael Angelo, in the South Kensington Museum, 1862. The god is represented as a youth of sixteen or seventeen years old, kneeling on one knee in an animated momentary attitude difficult to describe; the head is turned to one side in a movement elegantly contrasted with that of the torso; the right arm extends downwards, as if about to take up some object from the ground, whilst the other, holding a bow, is raised in the air, level with the head; a quiver of arrows and some drapery rest on the ground on the left. Various portions of the work, particularly the hair of the head and the drapery on the ground, are left unfinished...The upraised arm - which, from its disengaged position, must (in all probability) originally have been sculptured from a different block and adjusted to the statue - is a skilful restoration by Signor Santarelli, Professor of Sculpture in the Academy of Florence, the original arm having perished, either from exposure to the weather for a long series of years, or from having been fractured by pistol-bullets, the marks of several of which are visible in other portions of the statue, and which were wantonly fired at it whilst placed in the Riccadi Gardens, in Florence'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
Cupid, by Michael Angelo, in the South Kensington Museum, 1862: A Timeless Masterpiece of Renaissance Sculpture This image showcases the legendary figure of Cupid, the Roman god of love, as depicted by the great Italian artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), in the South Kensington Museum, London, during the year 1862. The exact creator of this photograph is unknown. The statue portrays Cupid as a young and graceful figure, with an animated expression and a momentary attitude. His head is turned to one side, elegantly contrasting with the movement of his torso. The right arm is extended downwards, as if about to pick up an object from the ground, while the left arm, holding a bow, is raised in the air. A quiver of arrows and some drapery lie on the ground to the left. However, the statue is not a complete work of art. The hair of the head and the drapery on the ground are left unfinished. The upraised arm, which appears to be from a different block and was skillfully restored by Signor Santarelli, Professor of Sculpture in the Academy of Florence, is a testament to the statue's rich history. The original arm had perished, either due to exposure to the weather or from being fractured by pistol bullets, which are visible in other parts of the statue. These bullets were fired at it while it was placed in the Riccadi Gardens in Florence. Despite the incompleteness of the statue, the beauty and mastery of Michelangelo's work continue to captivate and inspire viewers, making it a priceless addition to the South Kensington Museum's collection.
