An Exciting Game - Pupils of Christs Hospital School, City of London, c1900 (1911)
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment frozen in time - a group of energetic boys engaged in an exhilarating game at Christs Hospital School. Founded in 1552 with the noble intention of providing education for underprivileged children, this institution was the brainchild of King Edward VI and his dedicated supporters. In this snapshot from around 1900, we witness the spirited nature of these young students as they immerse themselves in a game that appears to be rugby. Clad in their distinctive blue uniforms known as "Bluecoats" these boys showcase their athleticism and camaraderie on the school playground. The image exudes nostalgia for a bygone era, evoking memories of childhood innocence and carefree play. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to the scene, emphasizing both the unity among these pupils and their determination to excel in sports. Christs Hospital School's relocation to Horsham, Sussex in 1902 marked a new chapter for this esteemed educational institution. However, through this photograph captured by artist RW Thomas around 1911, we are transported back to its origins within the bustling City of London. As we admire this historical gem preserved by Sir Walter Besant's book "London - The City" let us appreciate not only its artistic value but also recognize how Christs Hospital continues to shape lives and provide opportunities for generations past and present.
