EDITORS COMMENTS
Female ICI employees take a well-deserved break from their important work at the Detonator factory in Denaby Main, South Yorkshire, 1957. In this photograph captured by artist Michael Walters, two young women showcase their exuberance and love for life as they dance a jive while their fellow factory workers look on with admiration. During the Second World War, this factory played a crucial role in producing military detonators. However, due to the effects of sulphur used in the manufacturing process, married women were only permitted to work on the detonator line for six months. This restriction did not dampen these ladies' spirits as they embraced every opportunity to enjoy themselves during their limited time working together. The image beautifully captures the joy and camaraderie shared among these hardworking women. Their headscarves and overalls serve as reminders of their dedication to both their jobs and country. The photograph is a testament to the resilience and strength of female workers during this era. Although the plant eventually closed its doors in 1964, leaving behind an important chapter in industrial history, this snapshot immortalizes a moment of happiness amidst challenging times. It serves as a reminder of how even amidst demanding circumstances, people find solace through music and dance.
