The first Englishman in Japan, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The first Englishman in Japan, 1860. Illustration from "Will Adams; the First Englishman in Japan. A Romantic Biography" by William Dalton. The Erasmus, the first Dutch ship which ever reached...[Japan], in 1599, was piloted by William Adams, a Kentish man...His skill in mathematics and the art of shipbuilding...procured him a long but honourable detention in Japan - a favourite of the Emperor; but in the midst of his honours and wealth he yearned in vain to return home to his wife and dear children. He never had that comfort. Detained by the Emperor, he lived many years on the island, and there died, at Firando, in 1619 or 1620. He deserves a high place in the list of the heroes of naval discovery and enterprise, and equally so among the diplomatists of commerce and civilisation. In Mr. Dalton's statement of the facts on which he founds his "romantic biography" we are told that, as a friend and confidant of the Emperor, Adams negotiated a treaty for this country, married a native lady, had children, and died after a twenty years sojourn in Japan...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The First Englishman in Japan, 1860,' depicts William Adams, a Kentish man who became the first Englishman to set foot on Japanese soil in 1599. The illustration is taken from 'Will Adams; the First Englishman in Japan. A Romantic Biography' by William Dalton, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860. Adams' exceptional skills in mathematics and shipbuilding led him to be detained in Japan for an extended period. Despite his favor with the Emperor and the wealth and honors bestowed upon him, Adams longed for his wife and children back in England. Tragically, he never returned home. Instead, he lived out the rest of his days on the island, dying at Firando in 1619 or 1620. Adams' accomplishments place him among the heroes of naval discovery and enterprise, as well as among the diplomats of commerce and civilization. According to Dalton's account, Adams served as a trusted friend and advisor to the Emperor, negotiating a treaty for England, marrying a native lady, and having children. His twenty-year sojourn in Japan left a lasting impact on both nations. This evocative image captures the essence of Adams' remarkable story, transporting us back in time to an era of exploration and cultural exchange. The unknown artist skillfully depicts Adams in traditional Japanese attire, surrounded by the exotic beauty of the Japanese landscape, symbolizing the blending of two distinct worlds.
