The First of September - the Luncheon - drawn by Duncan, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The First of September - the Luncheon - drawn by Duncan, 1850. A shooting party, resting from a grateful toil, has betaken itself to the russet shelter of an ancient beech and the savoury contents of an ample pannier...The time is about noon, and "sitting in a pleasant shade" a social group of men and dogs is seen discussing a luncheon alfresco, on "the 1st of September, near Reading". [Here] we are told..."is a very fruitful district, producing grain in great abundance."..is not that the sort of place where one might expect to meet with the sample of ornithology most sought after in September? Calm and impassioned as may be the outward semblance of the man, he has a world of agreeable emotion within...Full of life and energy, with a purpose as steady and unflagging as his bodily frame, the sportsman advances, beating closely and carefully field and meadow...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
The First of September - The Luncheon," an exquisite 1850 drawing by an unknown artist, captures the essence of a quintessential British shooting party taking a much-deserved break from their laborious pursuit. The scene unfolds under the protective canopy of an ancient beech tree, with a group of men and their loyal dogs gathered around an ample pannier, savoring the rustic delights of an alfresco luncheon. The time is around noon, and the picturesque setting is near Reading, a region renowned for its abundant grain production. The artist invites us to ponder if this idyllic location might also harbor the elusive ornithological prize sought after during the September shooting season. The men, brimming with life and energy, display a calm and impassioned demeanor, their faces reflecting a world of agreeable emotion. One man, full of purpose and unwavering determination, advances steadily, meticulously beating the field and meadow with his gun. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the pastime of partridge shooting, a popular hobby during the Victorian era. The scene is a testament to the rich rural traditions and the deep connection between man and nature that defined the 19th century countryside. The intricate details of the drawing, from the textured bark of the tree to the glossy coats of the horses and dogs, transport us back in time, allowing us to experience a moment of tranquility and camaraderie in the heart of the English countryside.
