EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph from the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress, we see Frank A. Daniels (right) and his younger brother, Jonathan Daniels (left), both sons of prominent American politician Josephus Daniels and suffragist Addie Worth Bagley, in 1915. The boys are dressed in formal attire, with Frank wearing a dark suit and tie, and Jonathan in a lighter-colored suit and bow tie. Frank A. Daniels II (1893-1983) would later follow in his father's footsteps and serve as a Congressman from North Carolina from 1939 to 1953. Jonathan Worth Daniels (1909-1994), also known as Jonathan Worth Daniels or Jonathan Daniels II, would go on to become a respected historian and author. The photograph was taken against a plain backdrop, with a large American flag hanging on the wall behind them. The boys stand facing the camera, with their arms at their sides and a serious expression on their faces. The image captures the sense of pride and determination that was instilled in them by their parents, who were both influential figures in their community and in American politics. The photograph is a valuable addition to the Harris & Ewing Collection, which documents the social and political history of the United States during the 20th century. The collection includes over 100,000 glass negatives and photographic prints, many of which capture important moments in American history and culture. The photograph also serves as a reminder of the importance of family and the role that parents can play in shaping the lives of their children. The image of Frank and Jonathan Daniels, dressed in their best clothes and standing proudly before a American flag, is a testament to the values and aspirations that were passed down from one generation to the next.
