Frederick V (1596-1632) the Winter King, 1812. Artist: Robert Dunkarton

Frederick V (1596-1632) the Winter King. Frederick, Elector Palatine (1610-1623) was offered the crown of Bohemia when the kingdoms Protestant Diet deposed the Catholic King Ferdinand II, the Holy Roman Emperor. Frederick accepted, and was crowned in Prague in November 1619. Unfortunately for Frederick, he did not receive the support he expected from King James I of England and the Protestant League, an alliance of German states, and he was defeated and overthrown at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. The brevity of his reign earned him the derisive title of the Winter King

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print, titled "Frederick V (1596-1632) the Winter King" transports us back to the 17th century and offers a glimpse into the tumultuous life of Frederick, Elector Palatine. Painted by Robert Dunkarton in 1812, this portrait captures the essence of a man who experienced both glory and downfall. Frederick's story unfolds against the backdrop of religious conflict during the Thirty Years War. Crowned as King of Bohemia in Prague after being offered the throne by Protestant forces, his reign was short-lived and marked by disappointment. Despite hoping for support from King James I of England and other Protestant allies, Frederick faced defeat at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. The artist skillfully depicts Frederick with a regal air, donning elaborate armor that symbolizes his role as monarch. His beard adds an air of wisdom and maturity to his countenance. The vibrant colors used in this lithograph bring out every detail, from his intricate dress to his ruff collar. Through this artwork, we are reminded not only of Frederick's historical significance but also how power dynamics can shift dramatically within political alliances. Dunkarton's portrayal serves as a testament to van Dyck's influence on portraiture during this era. As we gaze upon this print today, it prompts us to reflect on themes such as religion, war, monarchy, and resilience – timeless concepts that continue to shape our world centuries later.
