The French Andromeda; or, wanted, a Perseus, 1883. Artist: Joseph Swain
The French Andromeda; or, wanted, a Perseus, 1883. France is chained, like Andromeda, to a rock. In the foaming sea in front of her, Anarchy can be seen having risen from the depths of the ocean. This relates to a crisis of government in France when the majority of the members of the government resigned in protest following the introduction of a Bill that proposed expelling from France all the members of families that had reigned in France. This was as a result of Prince Jerome Napoleons rather unthreatening attempt to win power after the recent death of the French statesman, Leon Gambetta. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 10, 1883

The French Andromeda; or, wanted, a Perseus
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating 19th-century print that artistically captures the political crisis in France during that time. Created by Joseph Swain and featuring the collaboration of Jerome Napoleon and John Tenniel, this monochrome engraving tells a powerful story through its imagery. In the center of the print, we see France symbolically represented as Andromeda, chained to a rock. This represents the country's struggle for freedom and stability amidst political turmoil. The foaming sea in front of her reveals Anarchy rising from its depths, signifying the chaotic state of affairs prevailing at that moment. The context behind this artwork lies in a government crisis triggered by Prince Jerome Napoleon's attempt to gain power following Leon Gambetta's death. In response to his actions, many members of the government resigned in protest against an introduced Bill proposing expulsion for families who had reigned over France. Through satire and caricature, "The French Andromeda; or, wanted, a Perseus" offers commentary on these events. It highlights both the vulnerability of France as it grapples with internal conflicts and emphasizes the urgent need for strong leadership akin to Perseus rescuing Andromeda from her chains. This heritage image partnership between Swain, Napoleon, and Tenniel serves as a historical testament to not only artistic expression but also political awareness during this tumultuous period in French history.
