EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable fresco depicting St Elias within the Roman gymnasium at Salamis, North Cyprus. The rich history of this ancient site dates back to the 11th century BC, with evidence of Phoenician and Assyrian settlements discovered by archaeologists. Over time, Salamis evolved into a significant Greek city-state before becoming an important Roman city. The gymnasium itself flourished during the 3rd century, as depicted in this vividly colored fresco. Unfortunately, Salamis faced devastating earthquakes in the 4th century that caused severe damage. Its decline continued when it was sacked during the Arab invasion of Cyprus in 649 AD, leading to its eventual abandonment. In this image captured by Peter Thompson, we witness a male figure believed to be St Elias or Elijah from the Old Testament. This Christian prophet holds great significance not only for religious communities but also for those interested in Jewish and Hebrew traditions. As we explore this archaeological gem through Thompson's lens, we are reminded of Salamis' glorious past and its enduring ruins that predominantly reflect its Roman period. This print serves as a testament to both historical preservation and our fascination with uncovering fragments of human civilization throughout time.
