EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1938 near Conway, Arkansas, captures the essence of rural life during the Great Depression era in the United States. The image depicts a row of fruit jars being sterilized on an old lady's back fence, ready for preserving the bounty of the season. The scene exudes a sense of simplicity and self-sufficiency, as the woman prepares for the annual canning process. The photograph is part of Dorothea Lange's extensive body of work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and the Office of War Information (OWI), which documented the lives of ordinary Americans during the Great Depression and World War II. The jars, filled with various fruits and vegetables, represent the hard work and resourcefulness of rural communities, who relied on canning and preserving to ensure a steady food supply throughout the year. The photograph is a testament to the resilience and determination of rural Americans during a time of economic hardship. The woman in the photograph, who is identified only as Lee Russell, can be seen swapping goods with her neighbors to obtain a diverse range of produce for canning. The jars, lined up neatly on the fence, are a symbol of the community's shared commitment to preserving their heritage and ensuring food security during challenging times. The photograph also highlights the rustic charm of rural life, with the old fence, glass jars, and simple garden in the background. The use of black and white adds to the timeless quality of the image, making it a valuable historical record of a bygone era.
