Gobelins tapestries, France, late 17th-early18th century, (1898). Creator: Unknown

Gobelins tapestries, late 17th-early18th century, (1898). Fig 1: Gobelin tapestry for the Castle of St. Germain [Chateau-Neuf de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, near Paris], designed for Louis XIV by D Espouy. Fig 2: Border of a gobelin carpet representing the triumph of Hercules for Louis XIVs rooms at Versailles, designed by Noel Coypel. Figs 1 and 2 drawn by N. Vivien of Paris...Although the preparation of the weaved copy demands great skill, and for an exact resemblance of the original a master-hand is necessary, which can employ the most effectual methods, yet we must also remember that the perfection of this " picture-weaving" absolutely depends on the excellence of the painting. At the same time the painter must keep in mind the necessity of suiting his design to the technical processes at the weavers command, and must avoid effects only attainable by painting in oils. If these rules are followed the copied fabric will have an artisticvalue in spite of all temporary changes of taste. Plate 80b from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two exquisite Gobelins tapestries from late 17th-early 18th century France. The first image, Fig 1, displays a stunning Gobelin tapestry designed for Louis XIV's Castle of St. Germain by D Espouy. Its intricate details and vibrant colors are a testament to the masterful craftsmanship of the unknown creator. In Fig 2, we see the border of another gobelin carpet representing the triumph of Hercules, specifically designed by Noel Coypel for Louis XIV's rooms at Versailles. The caption also highlights an important aspect of these tapestries - their connection to painting and artistic value. It emphasizes that while weaving an exact copy requires great skill and a master-hand, it is crucial for the painter to create a design that suits the technical processes available to the weavers. By doing so, they can ensure that even with temporary changes in taste, these copied fabrics retain their artistic worth. Plate 80b from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from German author H. Dolmetsch's work, provides us with this insightful glimpse into the world of Gobelins tapestries in late 17th-early 18th century France. This print serves as both a visual delight and a reminder of the rich history behind these remarkable works of art.
