The holy of holies and shrine for the divine image, Temple of Edfu, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
The holy of holies and shrine for the divine image, Temple of Edfu, Egypt, 1905. We are now standing where only the King and High Priest were allowed to enter, in the holy of holies of the great Horus Temple at Edfu...where the sacred processions stopped as the High Priest went in to perform the daily ritual before the god in the holy place, while on the great feast days a multitude of this mans ancestors thronged the court outside. They were simple villagers like him; they never saw the interior of this holy chamber. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

The Holy of Holies - A Glimpse into Ancient Egyptian Sacredness
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back in time to the year 1905, capturing the awe-inspiring holy of holies and shrine for the divine image within the Temple of Edfu, Egypt. The talented photographers Underwood & Underwood have skillfully depicted this sacred chamber, which was once accessible only to kings and high priests. As we stand before this hallowed space, we can almost feel its sanctity emanating from the walls. This was where daily rituals were performed by the High Priest before the god residing within. On grand feast days, a multitude of ancestors would gather outside in anticipation, simple villagers who never had the privilege to witness what lay beyond these walls. The stereoscopic card allows us to appreciate even more intricately detailed aspects of this ancient marvel. We are reminded that this temple served as a focal point for religious devotion and cultural identity in ancient Egypt. Through this photograph's monochrome lens, we are transported not just through space but also through time. It is an invitation to explore one of humanity's oldest civilizations and their deep reverence for deities like Horus. Let us cherish this glimpse into history; it reminds us that even centuries later, our fascination with ancient cultures endures.
