Hop-pickers on the Road - drawn by Phiz, 1858. Creator: Hablot Knight Browne
Hop-pickers on the Road - drawn by Phiz, 1858. Seasonal farm workers. Here meet together the respectable poor and the disreputable poor, the honest labourer and the thief (doing honest work now), the decently dressed and the ragged and tattered, the clean and the dirty, the frank open-faced and the cut-throat looking; all working peacefully together...cheerful and happy, and the most depraved seemingly softened down by the beauties of nature which surround them...Kent and Sussex [are] the chief hop-growing counties. Hop-picking generally commences about the early part of September, and ends towards the middle of October'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
Hop-pickers on the Road" is a captivating and evocative image drawn by the renowned English illustrator Hablot Knight Browne, better known by his pen name Phiz, in 1858. This engraving captures the essence of the hop-picking season in the counties of Kent and Sussex, two regions renowned for their hop cultivation. The scene portrays a diverse group of individuals, gathered together in a peaceful and harmonious setting, as they make their way to the hop fields. The image showcases the convergence of the 'respectable' and 'disreputable' poor, the honest laborer and the thief, the clean and the dirty, the decently dressed and the ragged and tattered. The men and women, both young and old, are depicted with open faces, some cheerful and others seemingly softened by the beauty of the surrounding countryside. The presence of children adds to the sense of community and the joy of the occasion. The hop-picking season typically began in early September and ended around the middle of October. The workers, often migrant laborers, would travel from one hop farm to another, following the ripening of the hops. This image captures the moment of their journey, with donkeys and carts laden with their belongings, as they make their way to their next destination. The image is a testament to the hard work and camaraderie of the agricultural workers during the hop-picking season. The hop fields, with their lush greenery and the ripe, golden hops, serve as a backdrop to the human spirit and the beauty of nature. This engraving is a poignant reminder of the rich agricultural heritage of Britain and the people who played a crucial role in shaping it.
