EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black and white wood engraving, the House at Arrah stands fortified against the backdrop of the Dinapore Mutiny in 1857. The sketch was made by Major Vincent Eyre and later lithographed in Calcutta, with the finished print dedicated to the brave garrison who defended the house for seven days against three mutinous regiments from Dinapore. The House at Arrah, a detached two-storey building, was fortified by Irish civil engineer Richard Vicars Boyle and provisioned to withstand a siege after Indian troops in the cantonments at Danapur, Bihar, mutinied and deserted. Boyle, along with Magistrate Wake and 50 Sikhs, held out against the siege until it was lifted on August 3rd, 1857. The scene depicted in the engraving shows the House at Arrah, surrounded by fortifications and defenses, with soldiers and Sikhs standing guard. The building, now a testament to the bravery and resourcefulness of those who defended it during the Great Sepoy Rebellion of 1857, stands proudly against the Hindoostan landscape. This print, originally published in the Illustrated London News, is a poignant reminder of the events of the Indian Rebellion, also known as the Indian Mutiny, which shook the British Raj in India and led to significant changes in the administration of the country. The print, with its intricate details and evocative imagery, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of conflict and courage.
